I thought about doing a beauty favourites but I have so many new things to talk about this month that I couldn’t dedicate it purely to beauty (as much as I want to!). So if you need new beauty products, skincare, TV shows, books and podcast recommendations, I suggest you grab your cuppa tea or coffee, snuggle up into bed and enjoy my February Favourites – it’s going to be a long one!
Make Up Favourites
Let’s be real – of course I’m going to talk about make up first! I don’t usually change up my everyday make up routine so my favourites haven’t changed for a while – but I definitely delved into some new products over the past month.
Starting with some eyeshadow palettes – I ‘accidentally’ purchased 3 eyeshadow palettes this month and they were all stand up products.
We shall start with the Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette. And sweet it is – from colours to smell, the palette works so well together and I am in awe at how peachy it smells!
This palette retails for $70 AUD which is a bit of a dip in the pocket! I recently found selfridges.com which stocks the same palette for $55 AUD [currently sold out] – there is a bit of a catch but I’ll discuss that in my favourite online shops!
The next palette that is a goddess in my life is the Tarte Amazonian PRO Palette. I purchased this directly from the Tarte website – the RRP is $82 AUD however, I bought it when they had their amazing 30% off (score!). Tarte Cosmetics offers free international shipping for us Aussies if you spend a minimum of $91!
This 20 shade eyeshadow palette includes both shimmers and mattes with the highest of quality. The pigment is so beautiful and strong (although no fruity smell) it’s easy to blend and mix shades. I highly recommend this palette to any MUA’s starting out in the business.
Next in line are these oval brushes sent to me by Simple Glam Girls.
These retail for $168 AUD which is quite a lot I must say. BUT I have an awesome 20% off for you all (yes I get a small cut from it but you don’t have to use the discount – take it or leave it gurlfran) BEAUTYBYVEE20 will get you 20% off storewide which is pretty cool if you ask me. I love a good discount.
There’s been a lot of talk about these oval brushes in comparison to the beauty blender – they both have their pros and cons. Without going into too much detail, I LOVE the oval brushes for blending in my foundation, concealer and cream contour. It literally takes me about 2 minutes to blend in a face of foundation. If I find it’s too streaky, I’ll use my beauty sponge to blend out any lines that may come up. I find that I only really use the bigger brushes for the face and barely touch the tiny ones. So that’s my take on these brushes!
I’m not as excited with skincare as I am with make up, but I am definitely trying to dip my toes into the big scary world of skincare. I have been using Amie Skincare almost everyday (my review of Amie Skincare is here!).
In addition to that, I’ve also been loving the Lo’real Clay Masks in the Exfoliating & Smoothing Red Algae – this is probably my favourite one as I feel instant brightness and smoothness of the skin after I use it.
Another favourite I’ve been using is the Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub – I’ve kind of abandoned this guy in the shower for a while but I’m back into it and remember why I loved it so much. It smells incredible and the scrub is so gentle on the skin – I leave the shower feeling so soft and supple. As it’s an
exfoliate scrub I try and use it 1-2 a week to get rid of any dead skin. I purchase my Soap & Glory from Mecca, the Sugar Crush Body Scrub retails for $14 AUD.
If you know me, you’d know that I live for podcasts – it keeps me sane on the train. For the past few years, I’ve been obsessed with This American Life, Serial and Risk! which are all story-telling based podcasts – they are seriously amazing! You can read about these in detail here. As for the past month, I’ve been absolutely in love with the Joe Rogan Experience, Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People and Radiolab.
I’ll probably do a break down of ALL my favourite podcasts in a separate blog post but if you love podcasts in general, do yourselves a favour and listen to these – they may change your life. For Android users, I listen to all my podcasts on Podcast Addict – you can find this app via Google Play. Sorry iPhone users! I think iTunes is your best bet?
I’ve always been a bookworm, ever since I was in high school, I would stay up until 3am on a school night reading Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instrument series. I haven’t had much time between school, work and sleep but I definitely try and squeeze in a chapter or two every second day. My favourite books of this month include:
The Career Code by Hillary Kerr & Katherine Power
The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k by Sarah Knight
Everything I Never Told you by Celeste Ng
Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon (this is my 2nd time reading it – it’s so good!)
So there are two self improvement books and two fictions – life’s too short to read just one book! If you’re interested in bettering yourself, I definitely recommend the first two, and if you love emotionally stringing books, the last two will pull at your heart for sure. I always purchase my books from The Book Depository!
TV Show Favourites
Netflix Original – Riverdale
I usually never watch TV shows that make me wait week after week – I know, #firstworldproblems right? But I was out of things to watch so decided to check out this new Netflix original series called Riverdale. It’s your rich high school murder mystery show – mean girl [check], hot jockey [check], big athlete douchebags [check], pretty girl with perfect skin and hair [check]. Okay, so it doesn’t sound that great, but it’s actually not that bad! Netflix does a pretty good job with their originals and I’m impressed with this particular one – check it out if you’re interested!
Netflix Original – You, Me, Her
Amongst all the shows on Netflix, I also decided to try You, Me, Her out. It starts off as a funny romantic comedy of a couple struggling to find fire between their marriage then comes the ‘her’ aspect of the show. I love this show for it’s authenticity and rawness of emotions that unravels in the show. It’ll make you laugh and cry! Check this out for a slightly light-hearted show.
NBC – This Is Us
This show is seriously on another level you guys. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I watched the first episode which is how I like to get into a TV series. After seeing Milo Ventimiglia’s interview on the Jimmy Fallon Show, I had to watch it. Without giving too much of the storyline away, the show follows a complicated family, jumping from generation to generation, story to story. It really amazes me that the director, producer and writers created this web of a story without tangling the minds of their viewers. Be warned, there is so much emotion from this TV series – I’ve cried a few times already. The show has signed for the next two seasons (YAY) which is amazing – definitely watch this if you’re a fan of Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore.
That’s a wrap! I hope you guys enjoyed my long ass February favourites – let me know what your favourites of February were in the comments below!
